“My entire life I have had an appreciation for the game bird known as the bobwhite quail.
Its easily-recognizable profile, scurrying around in tall grasses, its unique whistling call — I love everything about them. That call is one of the first I could identify as a kid. Males whistle optimistically for mates, awaiting answers as they scavenge for food. You’ll hear them frequently this time of year. Springtime is the season of love for many species, and quail are no exception … During my life thus far, I’ve called Kentucky, Kansas, Maryland and Texas home. In each state, those familiar calls have been part of my springtime ritual. It’s amazing how something so simple can bring back memories from different times and places. Hearing that recognizable sound gives me hope and comfort, a way to feel connected to nature in all its glory.”
